Here is a video I have had in my vaults for a while now. As a fitness professional, I want you to understand how important creativity is to fitness marketing success. You must strive to provide an ever changing environment. You must strive to tackle weakness and movement dysfunction head on!

I may be way off but I believe the average fitness trainer knows very little about the human body. Most trainers are people who love to work out and are blessed with good genetics. This is the typical scenario you will see in most gyms. It goes like this….

Trainer A: He is a hot 22 year old male with a killer body. He is fit and loves to exercise. He oozes mojo and charisma. His workouts are really strict. He flexes and looks in the mirror as he flirts with women and drums up boot camp business. He talks sports with the guys and has some group workouts with a few of his macho grunting friends. Together they encourage each other and increase their self esteem through compliments, ball busting and a pack mentality.

Client A: He is a man who is kind of outa shape. He’s walking on the treadmill watching his usual TV show that he has grown used to and enjoys. He generally glances over at other men who are in better shape and wonders why he can’t get there himself. He often gazes at Trainer A who is talking to some pretty girl as she plays with her hair and smiles. Trainer A is just oozing with confidence and appears to Client A to have the perfect life.

So here is where the magic happens…

Something happens in Client A. Client A looks at his treadmill for the last time. He looks at his TV and his growing belly. He looks at his wasted muscle from poor nutrition and calorie restriction. Something wells up inside him. Something changes. He becomes excited. He becomes angry. He reaches down in an adrenaline induced WHAM and slaps the off button.

He has been waiting for this day for quite some time. He is done! He is ready to change. He wants to take back his life!

He wants a coach! He wants a mentor and a guide!

He wants results!!

Client A approaches Trainer A and asks The question every other prospect seems to ask. How much do you charge? Trainer A responds to client A and convinces him that he can change his life forever in 8 weeks. Client A at this time accepts his offer and they set things up.

What happens next?

Well this is where the story goes south. Client A has limitations and conditions that makes Trainer A’s workouts unusable. Trainer A does not really understand injury or limitation and proceeds to do a watered down version of his own workouts and uses his own training philosophy to achieve results with Client A or just copies another trainer who looks good as well.

This approach is not good for Client A because he has fundamental weaknesses and limitations that must first be corrected or reprogrammed before his body will allow further muscular or neurological development.

The success of your personal training programs will be greatly dependent on your ability as a trainer to market yourself and to restore a client’s body. The human body looks beautiful when it has functional unrestricted recruitment of all anatomy necessary to compete in the arena of life.

  • Are you doing your Job as a trainer?
  • Do you know anatomy and physiology?
  • Do you understand progression and movement?
  • Do you know how to spot a breakdown in function and pinpoint exactly what is going wrong?
  • Which muscle is not firing?
  • Which hip is too tight?
  • Why they look funny in plank?
  • Why one leg appears longer?

If you can that’s great! I commend you! If you can’t then you need a coach!

You need to re learn PRIMAL movement and understand its importance to true adaptive change.

Watch This video and note that YES most of your clients should be able to train like this to some extent.

This is extreme human movement and it is possible for all of us to reach some degree of mastery in our bodies.  No not everyone on this blog has clients that can do this, but I know that most could do a lot more than they are doing now.

Am I calling you out?

Maybe….

Why?

So you get out of your own heads, stop wasting time with protein supplements and restricted range of motion exercises. Stop thinking you can train your clients just like you train yourself!

Brian, THANK YOU very much for sharing your incredible talent, you really challenge us to become more and to offer a better more effective service to the public. I coach runners, and I am a runner myself, I really want to learn how to see and fix those questions on my clients and myself, I do have college anatomy and physiology courses under my belt, but would not know how to answers those very important questions. Do you have a DVD, or books or any suggestions that would help me learn more so I can help others.

  4. Patti says:

I LOVE this video! I am a Registered Dietitian and just got itno personal training a few years ago. Currently, I have the unsual job of getting prisoners off their butts and in better shape.. This video gives me something to work with – no weights in prison, my friend. I also do a boot camp with paying clients and think this site is spectacular. Thanks for the constant inspiration!

p.s. One of my inmates ( who is blind ) just did 140 burpies in 10 minutes. Unbelievable!

  5. Anto says:

Great stuff alright. Will give you a laugh did a bootcamp class for my local semi pro rugby team here in Ireland. Which consisted of a load of Brian’s and those guys moves plus my own spin on it. They were beat after 15mins. Think of the movements involved in their sport which they get paid for and 15mins was there max.

  6. Heather says:

As always, great content! You continually push the bounds of “normal” thinking and training. How do you get started?? Do you implement these exercises into what is considered normal training? Do you do on-line personal training?

    Thanks for sharing.

  7. Bombino says:

That is savage stuff, mad to go out a try some of it. The press-ups with the arms outstretched is ridiculous, keep the videos posted!

  8. Brian Devlin says:

    Ian,
    Go For It!

I am so glad I inspire any of you on any level

  9. Brian Devlin says:

    Omarto,
Yes thank you and to answer your question there are many ways to find these imbalances. I will be going over establishing primal movement in the Spider Training DVD coming out late this month.

Once thes primal movements are established the body can funtionas it was meant to and GAIT patterns over time will become stronger.

Runners in general are stuck in repetitive sagittal plane activity and suffer MANY issues

    Great question
Solius, ITB and priformis should all be checked for strength and extensibility

More to come in Spider Training
I think you are already a memeber od the DVD club so stay tuned!

  10. Brian Devlin says:

    Patti,

Thank youfor doing what you do. People like you are the un thanked heros of our time so THANK YOU!

You may find this interesting for your boot camps

    Anto,
    Awesome!

I tried rugby one time at Penn State. One time my friend talked me into it.

I got crushed by a guy twice my size and then we drank beer together…hahaha

That hurts just to think about it!

  12. Shawn says:

I really enjoy your videos . My shoulders hurt just by watching .

  13. Brian Devlin says:

    Heather,

    Great question!
On line personal training is not something I do. I do online coaching for Personal Trainers who want to grow their biz and phone coaching.

I still love 1 on 1 training and Boot camps.

If you would like to do online personal trainning
    I recommend 2 products

    http://www.hitechtrainer.com
    http://www.fitnessgenerator.com

I have used both of them and they provide basic tools for online trianing.

As far as where to start…
You would be a great candidate for my coaching club

    Here is the link

This DVD club will send you a diff DVD every month and its only $19 to try

  14. kim says:

    great video
I could probably incorporate those moves into my workout,
but my clients are not there yet

  15. Jenno says:

Finally one made it through mate!… I saw this clip a while ago as well mate, not quite as impressive as Casino Royale, or a Madonna film clip, but it should get a good trainer seeing potential for training ideas. Thats what I love about what you do and what You Tube offers – the reason why we have the Net in the first place, right? An exchange of ideas. I’m an awesome trainer, with a better off the cuff knowledge of anatomy than your average GP. I can give anyone an awesome workout, in 20mins with no more equipment than a towel! This is why my clients are fitter, and why I sell! I am Trainer A, but I have heaps of Client A’s, and they’re reaching their goals!… With your help, of course!
Keep them coming Brian – If you wanna exchange ideas mate, flick me an email!

    Joanna

  17. Gordon says:

Terrific stuff Brian. I really enjoyed the story of Trainer A and client A. I think that all of us as trainers need to keep this story in our minds all of the time and remember the qualities that really make a good trainer. Personalisation is the most important thing for each individual as each one has different capabilities and starting points. Your content is helping me greatly each week. Thanks.

I’m excited to see your stuff, especially the Spider Training! Thanks for providing these excellent videos & keep them coming. I think I’ll crawl down my stairs now! :)

  25. Iduma Ortega says:

    Hi Bryan,
This is an amazing video! i am very happy to see things are starting to change and more and more people is starting to train again outside of the gym, in the streets, parks, nature, using your own body as a tool for training. It seems some fitness centers are starting to change their mentality as well, and they are having less machines and more balls, ropes, cables, etc which is more functional an fun and better for the human body, if we want to train in all planes of motion and have bodies with less restrictions and more freedom. Please keep sending us information like this, and i hope the new personal trainers get a better education of what it takes to be a personal trainer, as you are right we have to think outside of the box and figure out why a client gets injured or not getting the results they want, so a lot of times is not just about the exercise, but it may be related to their nutrition, infant development, stress.
    Thank you very much!
    Greetings from Singapore
